The Dried and Preserved Flowers Behind Our Wreaths

At Door Wreaths, every wreath we create tells a story through its botanicals. We carefully select each flower, grass and foliage for its beauty, texture and longevity. Understanding the ingredients in your wreath makes it even more special — and helps you care for it properly.

Below you will find our complete guide to the dried and preserved botanicals we use. Click on any flower or foliage to learn more about its origins, how it is dried or preserved, the colours available and why we love using it in our designs.

Flowers

Dried Lavender — The classic purple favourite, prized for its colour and calming fragrance. A staple in our spring and summer wreaths.

Dried Hydrangea — Large, voluminous flower heads in beautiful muted tones of blue, pink, green and burgundy. Perfect for adding fullness.

Dried and Preserved Roses — Timeless and romantic, roses serve as stunning focal points in our wreath designs.

Dried Phalaris — Delicate, feathery grass heads in soft natural and dyed tones. Adds graceful movement and texture.

Dried Protea — Bold, sculptural flower heads that create dramatic focal points and a contemporary edge.

Dried Achillea (Yarrow) — Flat-topped clusters of tiny flowers in warm yellows, pinks and reds. Adds a wildflower meadow feel.

Dried Statice (Limonium) — Papery, long-lasting blooms in purple, pink, white and yellow. Excellent for colour that endures.

Dried Poppy Seed Heads — Elegant, sculptural pods that add an architectural element and a touch of natural sophistication.

Dried Peonies — Luxurious, ruffled blooms that dry into beautifully textured, romantic statement flowers.

Dried Billy Buttons (Craspedia) — Cheerful, spherical golden blooms on slender stems. Adds a pop of sunshine to any wreath.

Dried Helichrysum (Strawflower) — Vibrant, papery blooms in rich colours that retain their beauty for years.

Grasses and Tails

Dried Pampas Grass — Dramatic, feathery plumes that bring instant bohemian elegance and soft texture to our wreaths.

Dried Bunny Tails (Lagurus) — Soft, fluffy oval heads that add charm and a playful, whimsical touch.

Dried Wheat and Oats — Golden cereal grains that bring warm, rustic charm and a connection to the British countryside.

Dried Palm Spears — Dramatic, fan-shaped fronds that add bold, tropical texture and architectural interest.

Foliage

Preserved Eucalyptus — Soft, rounded leaves in greens, silvers and dusty blues. A versatile foliage staple in nearly all our wreaths.

Preserved Ruscus — Glossy, dark green leaves on elegant trailing stems. Perfect for adding depth and a lush, natural backdrop.

Preserved Olive Branches — Slender, silvery-green leaves that bring a Mediterranean elegance to wreath designs.

Dried Pussy Willow (Salix) — Silky, silver catkins on slender branches. A beloved sign of early spring in the UK.

Preserved Moss — Soft, verdant cushions of preserved moss that add a woodland, earthy base to wreath designs.

Other Botanicals

Dried Cotton Stems — Soft, fluffy cotton bolls on rustic stems. Brings a cosy, farmhouse feel to autumn and winter wreaths.

Dried Thistles and Eryngium — Spiky, architectural seed heads that add wild, textural interest and a countryside character.

Dried Honesty (Lunaria) — Translucent, silvery seed pods that catch the light beautifully. Also known as moonwort or silver penny plant.

Dried Amaranthus — Long, trailing flower tassels in deep reds and greens. Adds a dramatic, cascading element to larger wreaths.

Understanding Dried vs Preserved

Dried botanicals are created by removing moisture from fresh flowers and foliage through air-drying, pressing or using silica gel. They have a natural, slightly rustic appearance and a papery texture. Most dried flowers last six to twelve months in a wreath with proper care.

Preserved botanicals undergo a special treatment where the natural moisture is replaced with a glycerine-based solution. This keeps them soft, flexible and vibrant-looking for much longer — often one to three years. Preserved flowers and foliage feel remarkably close to fresh and are available in a wider range of colours.

Every wreath we make at Door Wreaths uses a carefully curated mix of these botanicals. Browse our full range of handcrafted dried flower wreaths or read our Care Guide for tips on keeping your wreath looking its best.
